Richard Borne, municipal councilor in Blainville-sur-Orne (Calvados) and each new envoy in charge of sports (since October 24), received a gold medal from the French Basketball Federation, in recognition of 50 years of work as a basketball volunteer, on Saturday October 15, 2022.

“The basements were used as changing rooms”

As for him, he was always training or coaching teams or refereeing matches. “The taste for basketball comes from my youth in La Guérinière. I started as a young man, at the age of 12, he recalls. We trained outside with our friends. And the basements of the buildings served as dressing rooms. There was no gymnasium yet. I liked this time of meeting friends with the sport I loved”.

The virus never left him. He formed a team in the army.

We played barrack against barrack. When I returned to Blainville very soon, I started the first basketball club. There was no gym again, we trained outside. Then the Lenormand gymnasium was founded.

Richard Borne, a volunteer for 50 years

Richard Borne has a true passion for basketball. In the club, which he never left, he held all functions: player, coach, official referee, president, secretary, treasurer. Because “yes, it is always difficult to find new members to keep the association functioning”, he laments.

However, he is a judge who has judged for 45 years: in the department, in the region, in the national, in the Caen Basket Club, in the league of Burgundy and in the region of Paris where he lived for several years, so he was an employee of SMN. He has been associated with Ouistreham as a referee for 15 years. Even today, he holds positions in departmental bodies, especially as president of the higher sports committee.

In Borneo, “we’re all grown up”

He dedicated his life to his passion. “In the evening after work, I went there”. And he passed on his passion to his three children and grandchildren. Everyone plays basketball in Borneo. “It must be said that we were made for this, we are all great,” he jokes.

Now, without ever betraying his passion for the sport, Richard Borne has joined the municipal team where he is the sports officer, giving the municipality the benefit of his expertise on the subject. “This is my first mandate in the commune. I wanted to get involved with Lionel Marie, the mayor. A way to become useful, to support the sport that is so close to my heart,” he says.
